SONCAP Certification

SONCAP Certificate

If your business exports products to Nigeria, you’ve likely heard of SONCAP Certification. The Standards Organisation of Nigeria Conformity Assessment Programme (SONCAP) is a mandatory certification scheme introduced by the Standards Organisation of Nigeria (SON) to ensure that imported goods comply with Nigerian technical standards, safety regulations, and quality requirements.

SONCAP Certification is a product conformity assessment program designed to regulate and monitor the quality of goods imported into Nigeria. It helps protect Nigerian consumers from unsafe or substandard products while also ensuring fair competition among businesses.

Through SONCAP, exporters and importers must demonstrate that their products meet relevant Nigerian Industrial Standards (NIS) or other international standards approved by SON.

How Does the SONCAP Process Work?

The SONCAP Certification process involves two main steps:

Step 1: Product Certificate (PC) - Issued after testing and verifying that a product complies with Nigerian or international standards. Valid for one year, can be used for multiple shipments of the same product.

Step 2: SONCAP Certificate (SC)- Required for every individual shipment. Issued based on the approved Product Certificate and shipment inspection. Must be presented to Nigerian Customs for clearance.

Which Products Require SONCAP Certification?

SONCAP applies to most regulated consumer goods, including:

  • Electrical and electronic equipment
  • Building and construction materials
  • Automotive spare parts and accessories
  • Chemicals and household goods
  • Machinery and industrial equipment

Exemptions include food products, drugs, and medical items regulated by NAFDAC (National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control).

In summary, SONCAP Certification is a mandatory requirement for most goods imported into Nigeria. It ensures that products meet the necessary safety and quality standards set by the Standards Organisation of Nigeria (SON). By obtaining SONCAP certification, businesses not only comply with Nigerian regulations but also gain credibility and trust in one of Africa’s largest markets.

If you are planning to export to Nigeria, make sure to secure your SONCAP Certificate to avoid costly delays and ensure a smooth entry into the Nigerian market.
